Synopsis: Miraculously rescued by a kindhearted criminal after surviving a fall from an inner-city bridge, a troubled Wall Street businessman engrains himself with his savior's family in this low-key drama concerning one man's misguided quest for redemption. Carl Lazarus would have certainly died if petty car thief Paul Schoen hadn't been in the wrong place at the right time. Immediately after dragging Carl to the safety of the shore, however, Paul mysterious vanished into the river waters never to be seen again. Feeling that he owes a debt of gratitude to the fallen hero, Carl searches out Paul's widow Marta and her young son Paul, Jr. Upon speaking with Marta, Carl discovers that the man who had been so quick to risk his life for the safety of another was in fact a dead beat who couldn't care for his wife and child much less cover the costs of his own funeral. While Carl generously offers to pay for Paul's funeral, he learns a hard lesson about uptown life when he is taken for all that he's worth. Nevertheless, Carl continues to venture deeper into Marta's mysterious world, eventually drawing the suspicions of Paul's former best friend Roach - a local gang leader who invites the well-heeled newcomer to join his crew in robbing a high stakes card game presided over by local underworld heavy Tito. In the aftermath of the heist Carl learns that he has a taste for crime, and he is eventually discovered for his nefarious activities and fired from his job. Realizing that this newcomer is more like her husband than she previously realized, Marta is stunned by the revelation that Carl did not simply fall from the bridge, but in fact had jumped. When the vengeful Tito comes gunning for Roach and his crew, the man who once tried to take his own life realizes that he may finally have a shot at redemption.   Source: allmovie.com
